Umuokanne Community Honors Dr. Latonja Eppinger with Queen Mother & Mmiri Aku Chieftaincy Titles

In a historic and heartfelt ceremony on January 28, 2025, HRH Eze Dr. Matthew Chiedozie Nwokoma, the revered Traditional Ruler of Umuokanne Autonomous Community, conferred the prestigious titles of Queen Mother & Mmiri Aku on Dr. Latonja Mitchell Eppinger, an American-based citizen, in recognition of her invaluable contributions to the development of the community.
Dr. Eppinger, who was bestowed with the chieftaincy title of Queen Mother & Mmiri Aku I of Umuokanne (meaning “Ocean of Wealth”), was honored for her significant impact on the community’s growth and progress. This title, the highest honorary chieftaincy in the Kingdom, serves as a symbol of gratitude for her consistent dedication to enhancing the quality of life in Umuokanne.
During her speech after receiving the chieftaincy titles, Dr. Eppinger expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the people of Umuokanne and the Traditional Ruler for the honor. She highlighted the deep significance of the award, not just for her, but for her family, and pledged to continue supporting the community’s development.
“I am deeply honored by the trust and recognition that the people of Umuokanne have shown me. This is a momentous occasion for me and my family, and I promise to work even harder to ensure that this community thrives and continues to prosper,” Dr. Eppinger stated.
One of the major highlights of the event was Dr. Eppinger’s generous donation of a Clean Water Project to the pupils of Central School Umuokanne. This donation, which included a water tank and tank stand, is expected to provide much-needed access to clean water for the children, ensuring their health and well-being. Dr. Eppinger pledged to continue supporting further developmental projects in the community before the end of the year, reinforcing her commitment to its growth.
In her speech, Dr. Eppinger also congratulated the people of Umuokanne for maintaining peace and unity, particularly under the leadership of HRH Eze Dr. Nwokoma. She encouraged them to continue supporting their Traditional Ruler and remain united in their pursuit of sustainable development for the community.
Dr. Eppinger lauded HRH Eze Dr. Nwokoma’s leadership, particularly his efforts in launching international self-sustaining development projects. She praised his vision for the future of Umuokanne and encouraged the community to remain active in supporting projects that promise economic benefits for everyone.
Barr. Golden Nwosu, the Former Commissioner for Lands and Legal Adviser to the Palace of Grace, spoke highly of Dr. Eppinger’s dedication to the advancement of Umuokanne, Imo State, and Nigeria at large. He emphasized that conferring this title on her was a recognition of her tireless efforts to support and uplift the community and beyond. He assured Dr. Eppinger of the community’s unwavering support, highlighting the capable leadership of HRH Eze Dr. Nwokoma, whom he described as a practical and inclusive leader.
The ceremony, which took place at the Palace of Grace in Umuokanne, was filled with cultural displays that showcased the vibrant traditions of the community. In addition to the chieftaincy conferment, the event also included the presentation of awards to other deserving individuals who have contributed positively to the community’s growth.
Dr. Eppinger, along with her husband and daughter, were in Africa for the first time to receive this significant chieftaincy honor. The community, known for its peace and unity, offered prayers for Dr. Eppinger and her family, wishing them a safe and successful journey back to the United States.
